New York
In New York, injecting any drug, such as Botox, is considered medical procedure. As a result, surgeons, PAs working under the supervision of a physician whose scope of practice includes Botox administration, and NPs working under written protocol or in conjunction with a physician whose scope of practice includes Botox administration, are all permitted to administer Botox.
When an approved prescriber, such as a physician, PA, or NP, has examined the patient and ordered the medication, RNs may inject Botox. Furthermore, the RN must be qualified to administer Botox, which requires knowledge of facial muscles, as well as clinical pharmacology and pharmacokinetics, including dosage criteria and adverse reactions, and properly validated clinical competence in the administration of Botox.Since injecting Botox is called medical practice in New York, RNs must be supervised by a physician and cannot conduct the injections on their own, even if a "sponsoring" physician is identified. Botox Cosmetic injection is a medical procedure, and RNs cannot legally perform Botox Cosmetic injections without the help of a "sponsoring" physician.
