In New Mexico, the injection of cosmetic or aesthetic substances, such as Botox, is considered the practice of medicine and can be done by doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants (PAs) under the supervision of a physician (PAs with less than 3 years of experience must be under a physician's supervision), and physician assistants (PAs with less than 3 years of experience must be under a physician's supervision) whose scope of practice involves injecting Botox. ; PAs working with a practitioner in a collaborative partnership (Collaborative practice) PAs (who must have completed three years of clinical practice under the direction of a physician) whose scope of practice includes Botox injections, and registered nurses (RN) and licensed practical nurses (LPN) who have the expertise and qualifications to safely and competently administer the treatment under physician delegation and supervision.


Since NPs are independent practitioners in New Mexico, they will prescribe and delegate Botox injections to an RN or LPN if the treatment falls within the NP's scope of practice, [2] the nursing delegation rules are followed, and [3] the RN or LPN has the education, expertise, and training to competently and safely conduct the procedure.


The injection of Botox, however, cannot be assigned to medical assistants, according to the New Mexico medical board.
